Organic Wool
Why choose Organic Wool? (Otherwise: Whats wrong with regular wool?)
Many Allergic people with sensitive skins will tell you that they are allergic to wool. What is often case, is that they are allergic to the harsh chemicals that are used to process the wool. Washing, Dyeing and Coating the Machine washable wools leave the wool overprocessed, harsh and scratchy, totally unlike the original thing.
Sensitive skins are also prone to itching and easily get damaged, which is exacerbated by the hard chemically treated fibers in "regular" wool. Children in particular are very sensitive and will often refuse to wear what they feel is scratchy and uncomfortable. My children, one has eczema and the other sensitive skin, both wear Treliske Organic Merino with nary a whimper.
Try it for yourself.
Organic wool yarns are sourced from an organic farm in New Zealand, certified* by Bio-Gro New Zealand.
Treliske which means "a place of trees" is a 3000 acre organic farm, certified by the New Zealand Biological Producers and Consumers Council since 1986.
Farmed by the Aitchison family for 3 generations, Treliske grazes Merino, Crossbred and coloured sheep flocks on their clean, rolling hills and downlands in the South Island of New Zealand.
Certified organic sheep do not receive routine chemical treatments such as drenching or dipping for parasites, fly dressings, antibiotics, growth promotants, vaccines, nor do they graze on pastures that have been sprayed with herbicides. Organic sheep are bred for resistance to parasites and are fed outdoors all year round on special herbal ley pastures to build healthy immune systems. Organic sheep must graze only on certified organic farms and be fed certified organic stockfood. Genetically engineered or modified feed is prohibited, and mulesing is not practiced.
Organic wool yarn has not been treated chemically throughout the entire production, from the farm to the end yarn. The greasy wool is scoured (cleaned) in special approved biodegradable cleansing agent before being carded and spun at a Certified Organic Mill.
At all times throughout production the wool is kept separate from other wools to prevent contamination. Each stage of production is audited by The Biological Producers and Consumers Council before certification is approved and the Bio Gro logo can be attached.
It comes in a range of natural colours from cream to dark brown. It is available as a super soft Merino for next to skin wear or Bio Natur, a wonderful lambswool, great for outerwear and socks.
Happy healthy sheep give us healthy chemical free wool.
