peruvian baby alpaca
For over 8,000 years, the graceful Andean Alpaca has dominated the highest mountains of the Andes, grazing on grassy pastures over 4,000 meters above sea level. With their close relatives, the vicuna, llama and guanaco, these animals provide the finest, warmest, and most luxurious textile fibers to knitters and weavers in one of the most difficult and delicate environments of the earth.
Hand sorting these natural colours gives employment to dozens of women highly skilled in visual and tactile recognition of beautiful alpaca fibers, spun in a small farm mill in Peru. Support the traditional Andean pastoralists by selecting this SKAL certified* organic, Fair Traded ANGEL TOUCH sport weight (4 ply), hand knitting yarn.
Alpaca is lighter, 20% warmer, silkier and has no pilling compared to wool or cashmere. Organic Baby Alpaca is the rarest and most precious luxury fiber. The finest of all Alpaca grades, Organic Baby Alpaca has a fiber diameter of approx 20 microns, and is only produced from the animal's first fleece. This yarn begs to be touched and knitted.
